A cross made out of nails
The pendant is not a plain cross with a texture on it. It is built as three separate nails: one long nail standing upright, and two shorter nails laid across it, one just above the other, pointing opposite ways - so there is a flat nail head at the top right and another at the bottom left, and a tapered point at the other end of each. Where they meet, a raised X-shaped band wraps over the join, like a cord binding them together.
It is a well-known Christian motif - the cross shown through the nails of the crucifixion rather than as a smooth symbol. Whether you wear it for that reason or because you like how it looks, it is the same object, and this page will stick to describing the object.
Every surface is polished to a mirror finish with rounded edges, and there is no lettering, engraving or stone anywhere on it. The chain is a fine square box link in the same color as the pendant.
How big it actually is
This is the number the old version of this page got wrong, so here it is properly. The pendant measures 2.2 in tall and 1.4 in wide (56 x 35 mm), taken from the maker's own dimension drawing. The previous copy said 2.3 in; that figure came from a marketplace listing's marketing text, and both the maker's drawing and the listing's own measured specification say 2.2.
In the hand it is a little longer than three fingers held side by side are wide - a definite statement piece, but not an oversized one. It is easily read across a room and it does not look like a costume prop.
The chain is 22 in. On most adult men that puts the pendant just below the collarbone, sitting on the chest rather than at the throat - high enough to show above a crew neck, low enough to hang clear in an open collar. If you like a chain that sits lower, on the sternum, 22 in will feel short to you; that is the most common thing buyers say about this length.
Black, silver and gold are not the same thing
All three are the same pendant and the same chain. What differs is the finish, and it is worth understanding before you choose, because one of the three is the bare metal and the other two are colors applied on top of it.
- Silver - this is the metal's own color, polished. There is no coating to wear through. A scratch on it exposes more of the same metal, so scuffs blend in over time.
- Black - a black color finish applied over that metal, on the pendant and on every link of the chain.
- Gold - a gold-tone color finish, again over the same metal. It is a finish, not solid gold and not gold-filled.
The practical consequence: black and gold will wear differently from silver. A color finish is thin, and it goes first at the places that rub - the edges of the nail heads, the point at the bottom of the cross, and the links of the chain where they sit against a collar. When it does, what shows through is the lighter metal underneath. On silver there is nothing to show through.
None of that makes black or gold a bad choice - they are the two most striking of the three and they are why most people buy this. It just means they need slightly more care, and it means we are not going to tell you the color is permanent.
What we have taken off this page
The old version of this listing made three claims we cannot stand behind, and we would rather tell you what happened than quietly delete them.
"Waterproof - wear it in the shower, at the gym or swimming." This is gone. It was written about the silver version by the marketplace seller the copy was taken from, and it was then applied to all three colors. On a color-finished piece it is bad advice: chlorinated pool water, repeated hot showers and sweat all attack a thin applied finish, and that is exactly how black and gold jewelry ends up patchy. Take it off before showers, pools and workouts. The metal will not be harmed by getting wet - the finish is what you are protecting.
"Resists tarnishing and fading." Also gone, for the same reason. We have no wear or corrosion testing behind this product, and a promise that a finish will not fade is not one to make on trust.
"High-grade stainless steel." Taken off as a stated fact. The only material information our supplier provides for this item is the word "Metal" - no alloy and no grade. Stainless steel is the usual material for this style of pendant and it may well be right, but we do not have documentation for it, so we are not going to print it as a specification. If the supplier confirms the alloy, it will go back on with the grade named.
If you have a nickel allergy, treat that missing material information as a reason to be cautious: we cannot tell you this piece is nickel-free.
Looking after it
Nothing complicated, and it matters most on the black and the gold.
- Take it off before you shower, swim or train.
- If it does get wet or sweaty, wipe it dry with a soft cloth rather than leaving it to dry on its own.
- Put on aftershave, cologne and sunscreen first, then the necklace.
- Store it on its own, not loose in a drawer with other chains - the fastest way to scuff a finish is another piece of metal.
Do all of that and the finish lasts. Wear it in a chlorinated pool every week and it will not.

Someone who wants a cross that reads as deliberate rather than delicate - heavy-looking, dark or bright, and unusual enough that people ask about it. It works over a plain t-shirt and in an open collar, and at this size it does not disappear.
It is inexpensive fashion jewelry, and it is priced like it. It is not fine jewelry, it is not a precious metal, and it is not an heirloom. Treat the finish kindly and it will look good for a long time.
