This is a five-piece grooming kit that plugs into the quick-release connector on a Dyson V7, V8, V10, V11 or V15 cordless vacuum. The brush head is a slicker: a bed of fine wire pins with a suction slot in the middle. As the pins lift loose undercoat, the vacuum pulls it through the slot and into the bin, so the hair that would have ended up on the sofa never leaves the brush. A second head with long metal teeth swaps onto the same handle for tangles, a trigger lock holds the vacuum running so you are not squeezing the trigger for ten minutes, and a stretch hose lets the vacuum sit on the floor while you work.

What it actually is

• A slicker brush with suction. The head is a rounded rectangle of fine wire pins, like an ordinary slicker, with a dark slot in the middle of the pin bed. The vacuum's airflow runs through that slot. You brush normally; the loose hair goes into the vacuum instead of into the air.
• A second, dematting head. A comb head with one row of long metal teeth clicks onto the same handle for loosening tangles and pulling clumps of undercoat before you switch back to the slicker.
• A red release button on the head. Press it and the pin plate comes away from the housing, so you can swap heads or clear the chamber behind the pins.
• A trigger lock. A small clip that sits over the vacuum's trigger and holds it on, so the vacuum runs hands-free while you groom. It is for trigger-style handles, which is what the V7, V8, V10, V11 and V15 have.
• A quick-release connector and a stretch hose. The connector clicks into the vacuum where the wand normally goes. The hose stretches from about 16 inches to about 59 inches, so the vacuum can rest on the floor a step away from the dog rather than hanging off your arm.
• Not made by Dyson. This is a third-party accessory built to fit the Dyson quick-release connector. Dyson is a trademark of Dyson Ltd, and this kit is not made, endorsed or sold by Dyson. The vacuum is not included.

How a session goes

• Connect. Click the connector into the vacuum's inlet, the hose onto the connector, and the brush onto the hose. Fit the trigger lock over the trigger so the vacuum stays on.
• Start on a low setting, away from the dog. Let the dog hear and sniff the running brush before it touches them. Most dogs settle once they feel it is only a brush; a few never like the noise, and the long hose helps by keeping the motor away from their head.
• Brush with the coat. Long, slow strokes along the back, shoulders and flanks, where the undercoat comes out. Keep the pins flat against the coat rather than digging in, exactly as you would with any slicker. Avoid the face, ears and belly.
• Swap to the comb head for tangles. Press the red button, lift the slicker plate off, click the comb head on, and work small tangles from the ends inward. Tight mats against the skin need scissors or a groomer, not this or any brush.
• Empty the vacuum, not the brush. The hair has already gone into the bin. Pull any strands wrapped around the pins by hand.

Good to know

• It removes loose hair; it does not stop shedding. A dog that is blowing its coat will still shed. What changes is where the hair goes.
• It works best on medium and long coats with undercoat. Retrievers, shepherds, collies, huskies, doodles and long-haired cats that tolerate a vacuum. On a very short, tight coat a slicker has little to grip and a rubber curry brush does more.
• Cats and small dogs need a slower introduction. The noise is the issue, not the brush. Use the lowest suction setting and short sessions.
• The trigger lock is a convenience, not a switch. Take it off when you put the vacuum down so it does not run flat.
• Suction is the vacuum's, not the kit's. On a low-battery or eco setting the pull through the slot is gentle; on boost it is strong. Start low.
