Read this before you buy: the USB port does not charge anything on its own

There is no battery in this backpack. None is fitted, and none is included. The USB socket you can see on the outside of the bag is a pass-through: it is wired to a short lead that sits inside the bag, and that is the entire mechanism.

It works like this. You put your own power bank in the inside pocket and plug it onto the short internal lead. Now the socket on the outside is live, and you can charge your phone from the strap without unzipping the bag or fishing around for a cable. That is a real convenience, and it is the only thing the port does.

If you were expecting a bag that arrives holding a charge, this is not that bag, and we would rather you knew now. Every listing photo of this product shows a phone with a green battery icon floating next to the bag. That is a graphic. No phone and no power bank ships with it.

And the glow is print, not a light

The pattern is a glow-in-the-dark print - photoluminescent pigment, the same family as glow stars on a bedroom ceiling. It charges from light. Leave the bag under a bright room light or in daylight for a while, take it somewhere dark, and it glows cyan-green.

Two things follow from that, and both are worth saying out loud. It fades. The glow is brightest in the first minutes after charging and dims from there; it is not a constant output. And it needs light first - a bag that has spent the day inside a dim locker will not glow much on the walk home.

There is no bulb, no LED, no wire and no switch anywhere on this bag. It is not a safety light and we would not ask you to treat it as one. If you want a child to be seen crossing a road at night, use a proper clip-on light. The large is a full school and commute bag for a teenager or an adult. The medium suits a younger child or anyone who just wants a light daypack. If you are buying for an older student who carries a laptop, take the large.

How it is actually built

Polyester Oxford cloth - the standard tight-woven backpack fabric. It wipes clean with a damp cloth, which is most of what a school bag needs. It is not waterproof. Some listings of this bag say it is; we have taken that off this page. Treat it as ordinary bag fabric: fine in a shower on the way to the bus, not something to trust a laptop to in real rain.

There is no chest strap and no waist belt on this model. At this weight class you would not miss a waist belt, but if a sternum strap is something you rely on, it is not here.
