Screw-in tire plugs
A nail in the tread doesn't have to end the trip
Screw-in rubber plugs that seal a small nail or screw hole in the tread of a tubeless tire, so you can re-inflate it and drive carefully to a tire shop.
They are an emergency seal, not a permanent repair. The tire industry's repair guidance says a permanent fix is a plug-and-patch fitted from inside the tire after it is taken off the wheel, so treat these plugs as the thing that gets you there.
How to use them
Pull, plug, pump
Pull the nail
Find the nail or screw in the tread and pull it out with pliers.
Screw in a plug
Push a plug onto the tip of a screwdriver and screw it into the hole until its base sits level with the tread.
Pump and check
Re-inflate to the pressure on your door placard and check the plug for bubbles with soapy water.
Then drive gently and have the tire inspected and properly repaired or replaced as soon as you can.
Where they work
The right hole, in the right tire
Tubeless tires
Cars, SUVs, light trucks, motorcycles and scooters with tubeless tires. Not for tires with an inner tube, such as most bicycle tires.
Tread only
Only in the tread face. Never in the sidewall, or in the shoulder where the tread meets the sidewall.
Small holes
Round holes from a nail or screw. Not cuts, tears or gashes. Industry guidance limits any puncture repair to 1/4 in (6 mm).
Specifications
Before you use one
- It is not a permanent repair. Have the tire inspected and properly repaired or replaced by a tire shop as soon as you can.
- Never plug the sidewall or shoulder, a cut, or a tire that has been driven on while flat.
- If the tire keeps losing air after plugging, stop, and fit your spare or call for roadside help.
- On motorcycles and scooters, use a plug only to get home, ride slowly, and have the tire checked or replaced right away.
