A freezer tray that gives the whole batch back in one piece

Rigid plastic moulds are the reason homemade ice pops stop being fun: you wrestle one out, it snaps, and the rest stay in the tray. Silicone flexes, so each pop pushes out from underneath whole, with the stick still in it.

Fill it with juice, yogurt, smoothie or coffee, freeze it, and you have a week of after-school snacks you actually know the ingredients of.

The lid is the part that makes it work

The silicone lid seats over the tray with a hole above every cavity, so the sticks stand straight up and stay centred while everything sets. That is the difference between pops you can hold and pops with the stick frozen in at an angle, halfway out. It also covers the mix, so nothing in the freezer ends up tasting of it.

Soft enough to turn inside out

The tray is food-grade silicone all the way through — you can twist it, fold it and push each cavity inside out to release a pop, and it goes back to its shape. It is also what makes it easy to clean, because there are no rigid corners for a mix to hide in.

Choose how many you make at once

Nine, ten or twelve cavities — the tray, the lid and the sticks are the same across all three, so the only question is batch size and how much freezer shelf you have. Each pop holds about 3 fl oz (90 ml), which is a child-sized portion rather than a supermarket one.

Everything you need is in the box

Fifty wooden sticks, fifty clear sleeve bags so you can wrap the finished pops and stack them back in the freezer, and a narrow brush for cleaning the cavities. Two full batches before you need to buy a single thing.

Getting a clean release

Leave a little headroom when you fill — the mix expands as it freezes and an overfilled tray pushes the lid up. Freeze until solid all the way through; overnight is the safe bet. To release, run the outside of the cavity under warm water for a few seconds and push from underneath.
