A neck pillow that packs itself away

A normal travel pillow takes up half a carry-on, or ends up clipped to the outside of your bag. This one is a soft velvet cover that you fill with the clothes you are already bringing. Push in a sweater, a hoodie and a couple of t-shirts, buckle the ends under your chin, and you have a full-size U-shaped neck pillow for the flight.

When you land, the clothes go back to being clothes and the empty cover folds down to almost nothing.

It arrives empty

This is the part to know before you order: there is no foam, fiber or beads inside. What you receive is the velvet cover. The filling is whatever you put in it, which is the whole point, and also why it costs nothing extra to carry.

Soft, bulky clothes make the most comfortable pillow: knitwear, a fleece, a hoodie, rolled t-shirts, a scarf. Keep hard or sharp things out of it, because they will press into your neck.

How to fill it

Unzip the end. The zipper runs across one end of the cover.
Pack it evenly. Roll or fold soft clothes and push them all the way round the curve so both sides fill. The more you pack in, the firmer it gets.
Zip it and buckle it. Put it around your neck and clip the two ends together under your chin with the buckle so it stays in place when you nod off.

Firmness is up to you: pack it tight for more support, or lightly for a softer cushion.

Where it earns its place

Flights. Wear it through the airport with your clothes inside, then settle in for the flight.
Road trips. A passenger-seat pillow that doubles as somewhere to keep a spare layer.

Airlines set their own rules on what counts as a personal item, and a pillow full of clothes may be treated as part of your carry-on allowance. Check with your airline before relying on it for extra space.
