Cats scratch the same few spots over and over: the outside of a sofa arm, the corner of a wall, the side of a bed or a door frame. This is a sheet of ribbed scratching carpet with a peel-off adhesive back. Cut it to the shape of that spot, stick it on, and the claws land on carpet instead of your upholstery or paint.

It is the same kind of looped carpet that covers most cat trees, so it gives claws something to grip and pull against.

What it is, and what it is not

It is soft ribbed carpet, not woven sisal rope. The edges are plain cut edges with no sewn border, which is what lets you trim it to any shape without it falling apart. It arrives as one flat sheet, rolled for shipping, in the size and color you pick.

Every cat is different. Most take to a scratching surface placed exactly where they already scratch, but we cannot promise yours will. A pinch of catnip rubbed into the pile, or gently placing their paws on it, often helps them find it.

How to put it on

Clean and dry the spot. Dust, pet hair and polish stop the adhesive from gripping.
Trim it first. Hold the sheet against the spot, mark it, and cut it with ordinary household scissors while the backing is still on.
Peel and press. Peel back one corner of the backing, line it up, then keep peeling as you press the carpet down firmly across the whole area.

The adhesive grips best on smooth, firm surfaces: wood, leather, painted walls and tightly woven fabric. On velvet, loose weaves or heavily textured upholstery it holds less well; there, and on cat trees that take a lot of pulling, a few staples or upholstery pins add hold.

Where people put it

Sofa arms and sides. The classic target. Cover the panel your cat already goes for.
Wall corners and door frames. The sheet folds around an outside corner so both faces are covered.
Bed bases, dressers and stair sides. Anywhere a cat stretches up and pulls.
Worn-out cat trees. Re-cover a shredded post or platform instead of replacing the whole tree.

Before you stick it anywhere precious

The adhesive is meant to stay put, so it is not a temporary sticker. Try a small cut-off piece on a hidden spot first. On painted walls, wallpaper and delicate or antique finishes it can lift paint or leave adhesive behind when you pull it off.
