Humane is a thing you do, not a thing you buy

A live-capture trap is only humane if it is checked. A mouse shut in a small enclosure has no food and no water, cannot regulate its temperature well, and is frightened. Left overnight and forgotten, a live trap is a worse death than a snap trap, not a better one.

So the deal is simple, and we would rather say it plainly than sell around it:

Check it every morning and every evening. Twice a day, minimum. Mice are active at night, so the morning check is the one that matters most.
Release the same day you catch. Not tomorrow, not after work if you can help it.
Never leave a set trap behind when you go away. Close the door so it cannot catch, or take it up entirely.
Release well away from the building and near cover — a hedge, a log pile, a wall — not in the open. Check your local rules before relocating any animal; some areas restrict it.

If you cannot commit to checking it twice a day, this is the wrong product for you, and we would rather you knew that now.

Why you can see through it

The body is translucent, so you can tell from across the room whether the door is down and whether anything is inside. You are not lifting a solid box to guess. That is the whole reason to buy a clear trap rather than a metal one — it makes the twice-daily check take about two seconds, which makes you far more likely to actually do it.

How the door works

A hinged flap at the entrance is held open against light spring tension. Weight on the internal treadle releases it and the flap drops and latches behind the animal. It is a light flap, not a striking bar — it is designed to close, not to hit. That is also why it will not hurt fingers while you are baiting it.

Baiting it, and where to put it

A small dab of peanut butter pressed into the recessed cup at the closed end works better than cheese and is much harder to steal without tripping the treadle. Use a little. A trap smeared with bait is a trap you have to scrub.

Placement matters more than bait. Mice run along walls, not across open floor, so set the trap flat against a skirting board, cabinet kickboard or wall with the open door facing along the run — behind the fridge, under the sink, along the back of a cupboard, against the base of garage shelving. A trap in the middle of a room mostly catches nothing.

Leave the ventilation holes along the roof clear. Do not set the trap on carpet pile deep enough to block them, and do not stack anything on top of it.

Reusable, and how to clean it

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse, and let it air-dry completely before setting it again. Everything is smooth molded plastic with no fabric and no absorbent parts, so it cleans up properly rather than just looking clean.

Wash your hands after handling the trap. Rodents and their droppings carry disease, which is the real reason to handle the trap and never the animal — tip the mouse out from a distance and let it leave on its own rather than reaching in.
