You own candles you never light

Most people who love candles have a small collection of ones they are saving. The good one from a birthday. The one that cost more than a bottle of wine. They sit on a shelf looking expensive because lighting them means an open flame in a house with a cat, or a toddler, or a curtain, or a bedtime you cannot stay awake past.

This lamp is the reason those candles come off the shelf. It sits over the top of a jar candle and warms the wax with a bulb instead of a wick, so you get the scent and a low amber glow without lighting anything.

The heat comes from above, not from a wick

The glass globe hangs from the arm directly over the wooden base. Inside it is a warm bulb. Set a jar candle in the shallow well underneath, switch the lamp on, and the bulb warms the top layer of wax from above until it turns liquid and the fragrance lifts into the room.

There is no wick to light and nothing burning, so there is no smoke, no soot on the wall above the shelf, and no smell of a blown-out candle when you are done. You switch it off at the wall the way you would any lamp.

Your candle stops being a countdown

A lit wick consumes the wax. That is why a candle you like has a shelf life measured in evenings, and why it tunnels down the middle and leaves a ring of wax stuck to the glass that never gets used.

Warming does neither. The wax is melted, not burned away, and the heat falls across the whole surface rather than down a hot spot in the center, so the pool spreads to the edge of the jar. When you switch the lamp off the wax sets again and waits for you. The same candle keeps going far longer than it would on a wick.

Turn it down and it is just a good lamp

The glow is dimmable. Low is a warm amber nightlight you can leave on beside a bed. Higher is brighter, and it is also hotter, which is what melts the wax faster when you want the scent to fill a room quickly. Brightness and warmth move together, so you set one dial and get both.

The wooden base is wider than the candle needs, which turns the rim into somewhere to drop keys, rings and reading glasses at the end of the day. On a nightstand that is most of what it does.

What it does not do

It does not come with a candle. Bring your own jar candle, and check that yours sits comfortably inside the recessed well in the wooden base before you order if your candles are the wide three-wick kind.

There is no timer and no countdown. Nothing switches this off for you, so switch it off yourself before you go to sleep. The arm is a fixed curve, so the height of the globe above the base does not adjust.

And it is a lamp with a warm bulb in it. The glass globe and the bulb get hot in use, so give it clear air, keep it away from curtains and paper, and let it cool before you move it or change the bulb.
