Save the fitting, not the wall

When a glued PVC or ABS pipe breaks right at a fitting, the usual fix is to cut the fitting out, and often the wall, floor or slab around it. A socket saver takes the shorter route. Chuck it in a drill, set the head into the fitting's socket, and it cuts away the stub of old pipe glued inside. The socket comes out clean enough to glue in a new length of pipe.

It is the tool for a tee inside a wall or a fitting under a slab: anywhere the fitting is hard to reach, but its open socket is not.

What is in the set

Four reamers with four different head sizes, for common Schedule 40 PVC and ABS socket fittings.
Each reamer: a galvanized steel cutter disc with bent-up blades at the rim, fixed with a hex nut to a hex steel shaft that goes in your drill.

Not included: the drill, pipe or fittings. If you need one particular size, message us with your fitting size before you order.

How to use it

Cut the broken pipe flush with the face of the fitting.
Pick the head that fits the socket. The right one slides into the socket with its blades just meeting the old pipe.
Mark the depth. Hold a new fitting of the same size against the shaft and mark how deep its socket goes, so you stop at the bottom of the socket.
Drill straight at a steady, moderate speed. Keep the drill square to the socket and let the blades do the cutting. Stop at your mark.
Clean out the shavings and dry-fit the new pipe before you prime and glue it, following your cement maker's instructions.

Wear eye protection, keep hands clear of the spinning head, and remove the battery before changing heads.

What it is made for

These are drill-driven reamers with galvanized steel blades, made for repairs on Schedule 40 PVC and ABS socket fittings around the house, such as drain, waste and vent lines. They are not for Schedule 80 or metal pipe.

The result depends on a straight, steady cut. A drill that wanders can take plastic out of the fitting wall itself, so go slowly, keep the shaft in line with the socket and dry-fit before you glue.
