Full-body beekeeping coverall
One piece, collar to ankle — so there is nothing to ride up
The moment a beekeeper gets caught out is almost never the calm part. It is when you are bent over a brood box with both arms in it, and a jacket rides up off your back, or a two-piece pulls open at the waist.
This is a single coverall. The fabric runs unbroken from the collar, across your back, past an elasticated waist and down to gathered ankle cuffs. Bend, kneel, reach into the box — there is no hem to lift, because there is no hem. The hood comes attached, and one pair of gauntlet gloves comes in the box.
The veil
The mesh stands off your face, and that is the part that matters
A veil that lies against your skin is a veil that is not doing its job. This one is a round dome hood: slim white plastic hoop stays arch over and around the screen and hold it open, so the mesh sits clear of your nose and stays there while you look down into a hive.
The hood joins the body with a zip that runs around the collar, and where the two zip ends meet, a broad hook-and-loop tab folds down and closes flat over the join. That junction is the classic way in, and it is covered. Between hives, the whole hood folds back onto your shoulders.
Straight answer
This is a single-layer suit. Here is what that means.
The suit is one layer of woven fabric. The only mesh anywhere on it is the veil screen in the hood. It is not a three-layer suit, and we are not going to describe it as one.
- Bees can sting through a single layer where it is pulled tight against skin. That is true of every single-layer suit and it is true of this one. Kneeling, bending, a shoulder stretched taut — those are the places it happens.
- Wear a layer underneath, and wear it loose. A long-sleeved shirt and long trousers under the suit put air between the cloth and you, which is the whole trick. So does buying it roomy rather than fitted.
- We do not publish a fabric weight, and we do not claim a sting rating. Our supplier states polyester and states nothing else, and there is no test result behind this suit. If you want a number, we do not have one to give you, so we are not inventing one.
If you keep hot-tempered colonies, or you are opening hives all day every day in high summer, a three-layer mesh suit is the right tool and it costs several times what this does. This is a coverall for the person doing a handful of inspections a season and wanting to be covered from head to ankle while they do them.
Where the gaps usually are
Cuffs, waist and gauntlets
- Elasticated wrist cuffs, gathered so the sleeve closes on your forearm rather than hanging open.
- Elasticated ankle cuffs, gathered the same way, meant to sit down over the top of a boot.
- An elasticated waist that pulls the suit in and keeps the loose fabric from billowing while you work.
- Gauntlet gloves — the hand, fingers and thumb are a smooth close-grained palm panel, and a long natural-coloured woven sleeve runs up the forearm with an elastic band at its top. Pull that sleeve up over the outside of the suit sleeve so the two overlap, rather than tucking the suit into the glove.
- A flat chest pocket and a hip pocket for the small things you keep losing in the grass.
Sizing
Measure a garment you already own, then compare
These are the supplier's measurements of the garment, not of your body. The suit is cut loose to go on over your clothes, so the useful number is total length — measure from the base of your neck straight down to your ankle bone and compare it against the figures below.
The waist figure is the elastic measured relaxed — it stretches, and it is not the size of waist the suit fits. On chest: the supplier's chest figures disagree between sizes, so we are not printing a chest number we cannot stand behind. We have asked for a corrected chart. Until we have one, size by total length.

That is the whole package. No smoker, no hive tool, no bee brush, no carry bag and no boots — the hives, smokers and tools you see in the photographs are there to show the suit in use, and they are not part of what you receive.
