Put it on a nightstand or coffee table, turn the lights off, and throw a picture across the wall for a movie night, a cartoon marathon or a sleepover. It plays video from a laptop, a streaming stick or a USB drive and has its own speaker.

What to expect: this is an entry-level mini projector with a 320 x 240 LCD panel. It accepts video up to 1080p and scales it down to that panel, so the picture is soft rather than sharp, and it looks its best in a dark room. It is a fun, simple way to get a big picture for movies and games, not a replacement for a TV or a home-theater projector.

Before you order

Three things to know

Dark rooms only

It is a small LED projector. With the lights on or daylight in the room, the picture washes out. Draw the curtains and it comes alive.

Soft, not sharp

The panel is 320 x 240. It shows 1080p video, but at that panel's detail. Great for movies and cartoons; small text on slides is hard to read.

Plug it in

There is no battery inside. Keep it near an outlet when you use it.

Setup

Running in three steps

Place it

Set it on a table facing a pale, plain wall or a screen, and plug it in.

Connect

Plug in a laptop or streaming stick by HDMI, or a USB drive with your videos.

Focus

Move it closer or farther for the size you want, then turn the focus until the picture is clear.

The picture gets bigger and dimmer the farther you move it back. A medium size in a dark room looks best.
