Turn the chair that is already there into your baby's seat

You are out, the table is set, and there is no high chair. This is the piece of fabric that solves that. It wraps around your baby's waist, its two straps pass around the back of an ordinary dining chair, and the buckles close behind it — and the chair you were given becomes a seat your baby is held in. It weighs almost nothing, it folds flat into a diaper bag, and it goes in the wash when the meal goes wrong.

It goes on in about the time it takes to sit down

Open the fabric out over the chair seat so the scooped part sits where your baby will sit. Sit your baby down. Bring the two side straps around the outside of the chair back, clip the buckles together, and pull the webbing until the fabric is snug against your baby's waist — firm enough that they cannot slide forward or stand up out of it, loose enough that they can lean, reach and eat.

That snugness is the whole mechanism, and it is the thing to check every single time. The buckles are the ordinary side-release kind, the sort you already know from a backpack chest strap: press both wings and it releases in one hand.

Soft, light and flat — it goes in the bag you are already carrying, not in the trunk.

Where it works, and where it does not

It needs a chair with a solid seat and a back the straps can pass all the way around — a kitchen chair, a dining chair, a wooden café chair, a slatted patio chair. That covers most of the chairs you get handed at a restaurant, at a relative's house, or on a holiday rental's kitchen table.

It does not work on a backless stool or a bench, because there is nothing for the straps to hold onto. It is not a booster and it does not raise your baby up — your baby sits at the chair's own height. And it is a soft positioning seat for mealtimes, not a crash-tested restraint: it does not belong in a car, a stroller or a shopping cart.

The mess is the point of the fabric

It is made to be washed. Wipe the surface down after a normal meal; when a meal goes properly wrong, the whole seat goes in the wash and hangs up to dry. It is soft fabric with no padding, no foam and no rigid inserts, which is exactly why it packs down to nothing and why washing it does not ruin its shape.

Using it safely

This holds a small child, so the rules matter more than the features do. Read them once and they take five seconds a meal after that.

• Stay with your child. An adult stays beside the child, within reach, for the entire time they are in the seat. Never leave a child in it unattended, not even briefly.
• Only for babies who sit unassisted. The seat supports the waist. It gives no head, neck or back support, so a child who cannot yet sit up on their own should not be put in it.
• Only on a chair with a solid seat and a back. Never on a stool, a bench, a table, a counter, a worktop or any raised, folding or unsteady surface.
• Check it every meal. Both buckles fully latched, the webbing pulled snug, the fabric flat under your child, and the chair itself stable and pushed in against the table.
• Stop using it if your child can push, wriggle or stand their way out of it, or if the fabric, the webbing or either buckle shows fraying, cracking or a buckle that no longer clicks shut.
• It is not a vehicle restraint. Do not use it in a car, a stroller, a shopping cart or a swing.

What arrives

The supplier gives that size as a single set of figures without saying which part of the seat each one measures, so read it as a rough guide to the fabric and strap span rather than a fit specification.

Three colors, one seat

Red. The Black, Red and Yellow seats are the same product in a different color — nothing else changes between them.

What we cannot tell you yet. The supplier publishes no maximum weight and no age rating for this seat, and no safety-standard certification. We are not going to invent one. Until we have those figures documented, use the seat only for a child who sits up unassisted, stay beside them, and stop using it the moment they can get out of it on their own.
