The shine was already in your hair. It just never made it past the roots.
Your scalp makes its own conditioner. A plastic brush skates over it. Fine boar bristles catch that oil and carry it down the strand, which is why hair looks glossier after brushing without anything being added to it.
Two bristles, two jobs
The pins get through. The bristles do the polishing.
Look closely at the pad and you are looking at two different things. Short, fine, dark boar bristles packed in dense tufts. And standing above them, longer pale nylon pins, each one finished with a small rounded ball tip.
The pins are longer on purpose. They part thick hair and reach the scalp, and the ball tips mean they arrive there blunt rather than sharp. That clears the way so the shorter boar bristles can lie against the hair itself and smooth the surface as the brush travels.
Neither one alone does both jobs. That is the whole reason mixed brushes exist.
Bamboo body
Light in the hand, and it stays that way when your hands are wet.
The handle and the whole back of the head are one piece of solid bamboo, finished smooth and left its natural colour. It weighs almost nothing next to a moulded plastic brush, and the grain gives your fingers something to hold when you have just come out of the shower.
The head is a rounded oval on a flexible cushion pad, so the pad gives a little where your head curves instead of pressing back at you.
Care: wipe the bamboo dry and do not soak the brush or run it through a dishwasher. Standing water gets in behind the cushion pad and works the bamboo loose over time.
Be honest with yourself about your hair first
This is a smoothing and finishing brush. Our own reviewers say so plainly, and we would rather you read it here than find out after it arrives.
It is very good at
Daily smoothing on straight, wavy, fine to medium hair. Taking down flyaway after a blow dry. Working oil from the scalp through to the ends. Beards and shorter hair, which several buyers use it for.
It is only fair at
Detangling. The bristles are fine and densely packed, which is what makes them smooth well, and it is also what stops them driving through a real knot. Break knots out with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb first, then bring this in.
It is the wrong tool for
Thick, tightly coiled or matted hair worked from dry. Wet detangling. And if you want a large paddle for waist-length hair, this is a compact brush - check the size below before you decide.

The brush is the only thing in the box. There is no cleaning tool, no case and no stand, whatever you may have seen in a supplier photograph.
How to get the most out of it
Start at the ends. Short strokes, working up a few inches at a time until the brush runs clean.
Then go long. Unhurried strokes from the scalp all the way to the tips - that travel is what moves the oil down.
Once a week, lift the shed hair out of the pad with your fingers and wipe the bamboo with a dry cloth.
A brush you will still be using in a year
Nothing about it is clever. It is bamboo, boar bristle and nylon, put together the way brushes were put together before everything became plastic - and it does one job properly instead of six badly.
