Three things to know

Tiny lens

The supplier specifies 1080p video. Like every pen camera, the pinhole lens does best close up and in good light. It is not a replacement for a phone camera.

About 75 minutes a charge

That is continuous recording per full charge, per the supplier. Top it up over USB before each use.

Have a microSD card ready

Everything saves to a microSD card, so keep one on hand for the pen.

Record responsibly

Know the rules before you press record

This pen records sound as well as video, and recording laws apply to it the same way they apply to a phone.

  • Conversations need consent in some states. About a dozen states, including California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington, require everyone in a conversation to agree before it is recorded. The simplest rule anywhere: tell people when you are recording.
  • Never record where people expect privacy. Bathrooms, bedrooms and changing areas are off limits in every state.
  • Classes and workplaces set their own rules. Ask before you record a lecture or a meeting.
