Where the panel goes decides everything

This is the one thing worth getting right. The panel spikes into soil wherever you like, but it needs genuinely full sun through the day — a panel that spends the afternoon in the shade of the fence it is lighting will fade out by ten. Put the panel in the sun and run the wire to the shade.

Bare copper wire, so it holds its shape

The LEDs are moulded straight onto a fine copper strand rather than a thick plastic cable, so the string bends around a branch or a railing and stays where you put it. It is also nearly invisible in daylight, which is the difference between fairy lights and an obvious length of wire strung across the garden.

Two lengths, three colours

Thirty-three feet with a hundred LEDs, or sixty-six feet with two hundred. Warm white for cosy, cool white for crisp and modern, or multicolour if it is going up for Christmas and staying up for the summer.

Through the winter

They are built to stay outside year round. Worth knowing honestly: solar runtime follows daylight, so a set that runs all evening in July will run for fewer hours in December — which is exactly when you most want them on. Keep the panel clear of leaves and snow and you will get the most out of the short days.

Runtime depends on how much direct sun the panel gets that day. Wipe the panel occasionally — dust and leaf litter on the cells cut charging more than people expect.
