One compact shovel. A small tool kit inside it.
A manganese steel shovel head on a handle that screws together from three sections, so you can carry it short in a pack or a trunk and build it longer when you need to dig.
The head has a serrated saw edge down one side and a bottle-opener notch. A serrated knife insert and a pointed glass-breaker cap screw onto the handle ends, and a screwdriver piece and a whistle round out the kit. It all packs into a fabric pouch with a cover for the head.
Dig
Fire pits, trenches, latrines, stuck tires.
The pointed shield-shaped head bites into packed dirt, gravel and snow. At about 6.5 x 5.1 in (164 x 130 mm) it is sized for camp jobs: a fire pit, a drainage trench around a tent, clearing a wheel that has sunk into sand or snow.
It is a compact camp shovel, not a full-size spade. For clearing a whole driveway, a long-handled snow shovel is the better tool.
Build it to the job
Short, medium or full length.
Hand trowel
Head plus one handle section for close work: planting, scooping, working under a vehicle.
Camp shovel
A mid-length build that still fits in a pack for most digging around camp.
Full length
About 26.8 in (680 mm) with every section fitted, for more leverage and reach.
The head can also be set at an angle to the handle, so you can pull soil toward you like a hoe.
The extras
Small tools that live with the shovel.
Swap the end cap for the serrated knife insert to cut cord or trim small branches, or fit the pointed glass-breaker cap. The saw teeth on the edge of the head handle thin roots and twigs while you dig.
Everything unscrews by hand, so you can break the shovel down again and pack it back into its pouch.
