Hand on the wheel with the sun coming through the side window. Hands in a raised bed for two hours. Hands on the bars, on the club, on the wheelbarrow. Everything else you are wearing stops at the shoulder, and your arms do the rest of the day bare.

Straight answer on sun protection

Sun sleeves are normally rated with a UPF number — UPF 30, UPF 50+ — and that number comes from a lab test on the actual fabric. We do not have a test certificate for this fabric, so we do not publish a UPF figure and we are not going to imply one.

What we can tell you is what it plainly is: a close-fitting, opaque knit layer sitting between your arm and the outside. Cloth over skin is cloth over skin. But do not treat it as certified sun protection, and do not let it replace what you would normally do — keep sunscreen on your face, neck, shoulders and anywhere the sleeve does not reach. If you need a documented rating, buy a sleeve that publishes one.

Most people who wear these every day are not buying a sunscreen substitute anyway. They are buying a covered arm.

Where the fabric stops is the whole choice

The two styles are the same sleeve down the arm. They differ only at the end.

• With Thumb Insert. The fabric carries on past the wrist and across the back of the hand, ending in a finished hem just short of the knuckles. Your thumb goes through a small knitted slot at the side of the wrist. Fingers and palm stay completely free.
• No Thumb Insert. The sleeve stops at the wrist in a plain flat cuff. Nothing on the hand at all.

Pick the thumb insert if the back of your hand is what is catching the sun — driving is the obvious one. Pick the plain cuff if you want to wash your hands, wear gloves over the top, or just want the sleeve out of the way of your watch and your grip.

The thumb slot does more than it looks like it does

The usual complaint about arm sleeves is that they creep down. A sleeve held up only by tension at the top has one job to fail at, and it fails at it every time you reach.

A thumb through a slot anchors the bottom end to your hand, so the sleeve is held at both ends instead of one. That is why the thumb-insert style stays where you put it when you reach, and the plain-cuff style is the one you will occasionally pull back up. The slot itself is knitted closed and finished rather than cut, so the corner of the opening is bound rather than raw — the supplier's own close-up calls that out, and it is the point on a thumb hole that takes the strain.

One size, and what that actually means

There is no size to choose here, because there is only one. It is a heavily stretched knit — it pulls on over the hand and springs back onto the arm, so one piece covers a wide range of adult arms rather than fitting one of them perfectly.

Worth knowing before you buy: it is a mild, even squeeze, not a graduated compression garment, and there is no published arm-circumference range. If you have unusually large biceps or unusually long arms, a one-size sleeve is a gamble rather than a fit — that is the honest answer.

What is the UPF rating?

There isn't one we can show you. UPF is a measured lab result, and we do not hold a test certificate for this fabric, so we do not quote a number. Treat it as a physical cover-up rather than certified sun protection, and keep using sunscreen on skin it does not cover.

Which style should I choose?

With Thumb Insert if you want the back of your hand covered too, and if you want the sleeve anchored at both ends. No Thumb Insert if you want your hands entirely free, or you wear gloves or a watch over the same spot.

Will it slide down my arm?

The thumb-insert style is anchored at the hand, so it stays where you put it. The plain-cuff style relies on the knit alone and will need the occasional pull back up, particularly on a slimmer arm.

Is it see-through?

No. In the product photography the knit reads opaque in all six colours, white included. If tattoo cover is the reason you are asking, the darker colours are the safer pick.

What is it made of?

"Ice silk" is a marketing name for a smooth synthetic knit, not a fibre — there is no silk in it. We have not been given a fibre content sheet for this item, so we are not going to print percentages we cannot stand behind. What we can describe is the hand: thin, flat, matte, opaque and very stretchy.

Is it a compression sleeve?

Not in the medical sense. It is a snug stretch knit that holds itself against your arm. There is no compression grading, no mmHg figure, and it is not a garment for swelling, recovery or circulation.

How do I wash it?

No laundry symbols are supplied with it. Our advice for a fine stretch knit: cold hand wash, squeeze rather than wring, reshape and air dry. No tumble dryer, no bleach, no iron — heat is what kills the stretch.

Will it fit me?

It is one size and unisex, and no arm-circumference range is published. It suits most adult arms. If yours are unusually large or unusually long, treat it as a gamble rather than a guarantee.
