An apron that stops you walking back to the bench
The job is never the job. It is the four trips back across the workshop because the tape is on the bench, the pencil is in the car and the driver bit is wherever you put it down.
This is a plain waxed cotton canvas bib apron with five pockets on the front and a set of straps that cross behind your back instead of hanging off your neck. There is nothing clever about it. It is the version of this thing that is made properly and priced like it isn't.
The pockets, measured
Every measurement below is a pocket. It is worth being clear about that, because a listing like this often quotes a number with no idea what it belongs to.
- The wide one takes the bulky things. A 25 ft tape, a multi-tool, a phone.
- The two middle pockets are for what you keep grabbing. Driver bits, a chalk line, a folding knife.
- The narrow one and the chest pen slots are for pencils, markers and a rule.
- A short webbing loop hangs at each side of the band for anything with a handle you would rather not put in a pocket.
- Brass-colored rivets at the corners that take the load when you drop something heavy in.
Tools are not included. The apron is the product; nothing else ships with it.
The straps are the part people notice
Cheap aprons hang the whole weight off one loop around your neck, and by the afternoon you know about it. The straps on this one cross over in an X behind your back and are joined across the shoulder blades by a strap with a side-release buckle, so the load sits on your shoulders instead of your neck.
The buckle is the ordinary squeeze-and-release kind, which means you get out of it one-handed without lifting it over your head. Two webbing waist straps pass round your sides and pull the apron in so it stops swinging when you bend. Both shoulder straps run through a padded canvas pad.
WHAT WE WILL AND WILL NOT TELL YOU
It is waxed canvas. It is not safety equipment.
The fabric is wax-treated cotton canvas, and you can see it in the photographs: the soft sheen, and the pale marbling that comes up along every fold. Wax on cotton sheds a splash, a spill and sawdust rather than soaking it straight through, which is genuinely useful at a bench. It is not waterproof, we hold no water-resistance test for it, and the wax will wear pale and thin at the folds and the pocket edges with use. That is what waxed canvas does; it is not a fault.
What it is not: this is not personal protective equipment. It is not cut resistant, not flame resistant and not rated for welding, grinding or anything that throws sparks or hot metal. Waxed cotton is a cloth, and wax is flammable. If your work needs protection rather than pockets, buy equipment that is certified for it and do not use this instead.
We publish no fabric weight, no load rating and no cut or flame rating, because we hold no test data for any of them. The previous version of this page described the material and its durability in terms we cannot document; that wording has been removed.
Will it fit you?
Honest answer: we cannot give you an overall length or width, because the supplier does not publish one and we will not invent a number. What we can tell you is how it adjusts.
- The shoulder straps are webbing running through sliders, so the drop from shoulder to hem is adjustable
- The chest strap across the back adjusts and clips, which sets how wide the straps sit
- The two waist straps adjust and tie off round the back
- It is a one-size adult apron with no size option, and it is cut to sit from mid-chest to around the knee
