Small on purpose. Read this part first.

This is a tabletop figurine, not a tree you stand on the floor. It measures 5.9 in (15 cm) from the base to the tip of the star, and the round glass foot is about 2 in (5 cm) across. Put a coffee mug next to it and the mug comes up roughly two thirds of the way.

We are leading with that because it is the one thing buyers of little glass pieces get wrong, and it is the difference between a shelf ornament that delights someone and a parcel that goes back. If you were picturing something that fills a hallway table on its own, this is not it. If you were picturing something that sits beside the candles, on a windowsill, on a desk, or on a bookshelf and catches the light all December, that is exactly what this is.

The ornaments come with it

The old version of this page listed one thing in the box. That was wrong, and it undersold what you are actually buying. Eleven tiny lampwork glass ornaments ship with the tree, each on its own small metal ring, and each one hooks onto a curled branch tip.

They are proper little glass pieces, not stickers or printed shapes — a Santa head, a snowman, a penguin, a red mitten, a birdhouse, a candy cane, a wreath, a wrapped gift, a snowflake, a stocking and a miniature tree. You hang them where you like, and you can rearrange them, which is most of the fun of the thing.

Hand-blown, so no two are the same

The tree is shaped hot, by hand. The branch tiers are drawn out and curled one at a time, the stem is pulled, the foot is flattened, and the star is applied last. Nothing about that process produces identical objects.

Which means yours will have its own character, and it is worth knowing what that looks like before it arrives. Branch arms sit at slightly different angles from one piece to the next. Depth of color varies a little between batches. You may find a small air bubble suspended in the glass, or a tiny seam where the star meets the crown. On a machine-pressed ornament those would be faults. On a hand-worked one they are the evidence, and they are the reason it does not look like the other things on the shelf.

Green or clear

Two versions, and they behave differently in a room.

Both carry the same amber-gold glass star and the same set of colored ornaments. If you are buying for someone who already decorates in one palette, the clear one is the safer gift.

Give it something to catch

Glass this thin does nothing in flat overhead light and a great deal in raking light. Put it where something is already glowing — in front of a string of fairy lights, beside a lit candle, on a sill with a low winter sun behind it — and the tiers throw green onto whatever they are standing on.

The flat foot means it sits stable on a hard surface without a stand or a hook. It does not sit well on a soft runner or a folded cloth, where the base can rock.

Getting it out of the box, and putting it away

It arrives in a gift box, which is the reason a lot of people buy this one to give rather than to keep. The packing is snug — take your time with it and lift the tree by the stem rather than by a branch arm.

Store it the same way it came: ornaments off, tree on its side in the box, in a cupboard rather than a garage. Dust it with a dry soft brush or a puff of air. Do not put it in a dishwasher, do not soak it, and do not stand it anywhere it can be knocked by a door or a curtain.
