Light-up plush horror mask

A teddy bear that should not be smiling

This is a full-face costume mask built like a stuffed toy: shaggy faux fur over a moulded plastic shell, small round ears, a wide grin of stained teeth, and a thin glowing wire stitched across each eye, over the nose and along the mouth. In the dark, the wire is the only thing you see. In daylight it is a bear that has clearly been up to something.

It comes as a bear or as a rabbit with tall ears, in a choice of glow colours, and each design is also sold without the light if you just want the mask.

How the glow works

Neon wire, three light settings, one small battery pack

The glow is electroluminescent wire, the thin flexible cord the costume trade sells as "LED neon". It is not a row of bulbs: the whole length of the cord lights evenly, so the crosses over the eyes and the line of the grin read as clean neon strokes from across a room. The wire plugs into a small 3-volt pack on a cord, and a button on the pack steps through the settings.

Light settings

Steady glow, slow flash and fast flash, then off. Press the button on the pack to move to the next one.

AA batteries

The pack takes two ordinary AA cells. They are not in the box, so pick some up before the night you need it.

Pack per mask

Every lit mask ships with its own pack on a cord. The wire is already fitted to the mask; there is nothing to thread or glue.

Settings, voltage and battery type come from the maker's own product manual for this mask. The unlit versions have no wire and no pack.

Reading the buy box

Twenty-three versions, four families

The names in the buy box tell you the animal, the fur colour and the glow colours. This is what each family looks like.

Stitched-eye bears

Two glow colours on one mask: one colour on the left ear, left eye and half the grin, the other on the right. Five colour pairs on brown fur, the same five on dark grey fur.

Outline bears

One glow colour tracing round eyes, a nose and every tooth, so the whole face is drawn in a single neon line. One on brown fur, four on grey.

Rabbits

White fur, pink inner ears and the two-colour stitched pattern, with the wire running up each tall ear. Five colour pairs.

No lights

The brown bear, the black bear and the white rabbit with no wire and no pack. Same fur, same grin, nothing to switch on.

Each version in the buy box is photographed lit, with a small inset showing it switched off. Fur colour on the unlit inset is the best guide to what arrives; the lit photos are taken in the dark and make every fur look black.

The only measurement the maker publishes is for the rabbit, and most of that height is ear. The bear has the same face on the same shell with short round ears, so it is noticeably shorter overall; we do not hold a measured figure for it and do not state one.

Where it earns its keep

Made for the dark

Trick-or-treat rounds, a haunted-house shift, a costume party, a doorway on the night itself: anywhere the lights are low, the wire does the work and the fur turns into a silhouette with a glowing face. Set it to slow flash and stand still.

The unlit versions are for daylight and photos, or for a display head on a porch. They are the same mask with the same grin, just without the glow.

Straight answers

What this page will not tell you

No batteries in the box. Two AA cells power the pack and you supply them. Have a fresh pair for the night.
"LED" is the trade name, not the technology. The light is electroluminescent wire. It glows evenly along its length rather than as points of light, and that is the look in every photo.
No measurement for the bear. The maker publishes the rabbit's size only. The bear is shorter because its ears are short, but we have not measured one.
Fur colour is what the unlit photo shows. Brown, dark grey, black or white as photographed. Faux fur varies a little between batches.
No strap details to pass on. The mask is worn over the face like any full-face costume mask. We have not been given strap type or adjustment range, so we do not describe one.
Not a toy for young children. The maker's manual says to keep the pack and its cord away from children under three and to supervise older children. Treat it as a teen and adult costume piece, keep it away from candles and open flame, and do not wear it while driving or cycling.
