It clamps to the edge of a shelf, and points light where the plant is

The old version of this page never actually said how this lamp attaches to anything. So, first thing: it is a clip-on lamp. The base is a sprung clamp with rubber-lined jaws, like a desk-lamp clip, and it grips the edge of a shelf, a desk, a table, a windowsill or a propagator tray. From the clamp rises a bendable metal gooseneck, and on the end of that is the lit head.

That is the whole idea. You put the light where the plant already is, instead of moving the plant to a window that does not exist.

The clamp, and what it will hold on to

The jaws are spring-loaded and lined with rubber, so they grip without marking a painted shelf or a desk edge, and they hold on a lip of roughly the thickness of a shelf board or a tabletop. The gooseneck holds whatever shape you bend it into and stays there.

What it needs is an edge. It does not free-stand, there is no weighted base, and there is no screw or bracket in the box. If the only surface you have is the middle of a wide table with no lip, this is the wrong lamp.

Two head styles, and the real difference between them

Every version of this lamp comes in one of two lighting styles, and the choice matters more than the shape does.

You also choose how many heads you want, from one to four. Each head sits on its own gooseneck out of the same clamp and the same controller, so more heads means more area covered, not a brighter single spot.

Brightness and the timer

Both live on the small oval controller partway along the cable, so you are not reaching behind a plant to find a switch.

• Five brightness levels — the supplier documents them as twenty, forty, sixty, eighty and one hundred percent.
• A timer with three preset durations, shown by three small indicator lights on the controller. Set it once and it repeats on a daily cycle, so the lamp comes back on at the same time each day without you touching it.
• The controller stays in the cable, between the USB plug and the lamp, so it sits on the desk rather than up at the clamp.

We are not printing the exact timer hours, because the supplier does not state them for this unit and we are not going to guess at a number a buyer would plan a routine around. Three presets is what the hardware shows. If you need the exact durations before you order, ask us and we will confirm them with the supplier.

It runs on USB, and that is worth understanding before you buy

The lamp ends in a standard USB-A plug on a long cable. That is genuinely convenient: it runs from a phone charger, a laptop, a power bank, a plug strip with a USB socket. There is no driver box and no mains transformer to hide.

It also sets a ceiling. USB is a five-volt supply, and how much power the lamp can draw depends entirely on what you plug it into. That puts this firmly in the category of a supplementary light for a handful of small plants close to the head. It is not a grow tent light, it is not going to carry a fruiting tomato through a dark winter, and it will not light a whole shelf of full-size houseplants.

Where it does earn its place: seedlings and cuttings, herbs on a kitchen counter, succulents that are stretching and going pale, a plant in a room with one small north-facing window, and the dim months when nothing on the windowsill is getting enough.

Two things we deliberately do not publish for this lamp: a wattage and a PAR or PPFD figure. The supplier states neither, and a PPFD number quoted without the distance it was measured at is not a specification at all. We would rather tell you what the light is for than print a number we cannot stand behind.

Where to point it, and where not to

Angle the head down onto the leaves and keep the lit strip itself out of your eye line. Red and blue LEDs at close range are genuinely unpleasant to look at directly, and the magenta light is tiring in peripheral vision even when it is not pointed at you.

• Get the head close to the plant. Light falls away quickly, and a lamp this size does very little from across a room.
• If the lamp shares a desk with you, run it at a lower brightness, or choose the warm white style instead.
• Keep the plant a comfortable distance below the head rather than touching it, and check the leaves after a few days.

Specification

Every dimension above comes from the supplier’s own measured drawing for this part, and each one is labeled with what it actually measures. That matters here: the figures previously published on this page as a single “size” were three separate measurements run together — the length of the lit bar, its width, and the length of the gooseneck — which read as if the whole lamp were eleven inches tall. It is not; the gooseneck alone is that long, before you add the clamp and the head.

The dark months, mostly

Most people buy one of these in the fall, when the plants that were fine all summer start reaching and going pale. Clamp it to the shelf they already live on, bend the head over them, set the timer, and leave it.
