The working part moves to where it hurts
Most back massagers have their mechanism bolted where the factory decided to put it. That is fine if your problem happens to be where the factory guessed. It usually is not.
This one is built the other way round. The mat has two pockets — one at the head end, one further down — and two working parts that you move between them by hand. Where the massage happens is a decision you make, not one you inherit.
A kneading unit, and an air bag you pump by hand
The first part is a shiatsu kneading module — rounded nodes that rotate behind a black mesh window, so you feel them directly rather than through a slab of padding. That is the part that presses and circles.
The second is an inflatable air bag with a rubber squeeze bulb on a hose. You pump it up by hand, by feel, until the lift under your lower back or the nape of your neck is where you want it — and let it back down when you want to lie flat. No motor deciding on your behalf, and nothing to set up.
Two parts, two pockets, your choice
Kneading at your neck and shoulders with the air bag lifting under your waist. Or swap them, and put the kneading into your lower back with the air bag supporting your neck. It takes a few seconds and no tools. The handset has a dedicated positioning button for setting where the unit works.
Warmth is its own button
Heat sits on a separate control from the massage, so the two do not have to run together. Some evenings you want warmth and nothing else; some you want the mechanism and no heat at all. Both are available on their own. On a cold night the warmth is often the entire reason people get the mat out.
On the bed, on the floor, or over a chair
It is a mat, not a mattress — long enough to lie on from the back of your head to about mid-calf, and roughly shoulder width. It goes on top of the bedding, on the floor in front of the television, or on a sofa.
A firm surface gives you more. On a soft mattress the mat sinks in with you and the kneading unit has less to push against; on the floor it has everything to push against. Draped over an armchair with the head end up the back, you get the same unit against your shoulders sitting upright.
Sitting up, not just lying down
Laid over an armchair or a recliner, the raised head-pillow end sits behind your neck and shoulders and the rest runs down the seat. It is the position most people end up using on a weeknight, because you can do it without leaving the chair you were already in.
Folds flat and goes away
This is the part a massage chair cannot do. It folds into flat layers, roughly like a folded blanket, and lives on a shelf or in a cupboard between uses. Fold it along its natural lines when it is unplugged and cool — do not crease it hard across the kneading module, and never fold or bunch it while it is switched on.
What you get
- The mat itself, in grey quilted fabric, which folds flat for storage
- One shiatsu kneading module behind a mesh window, which moves between two pockets
- One inflatable air bag with a manual squeeze-bulb hand pump
- Heating, on a separate control from the massage
- A wired handset on a cable — power and timer, mode, strength, speed, positioning and heat
- Mains powered — choose the US, UK or EU plug at checkout
We publish only what we can confirm from the manufacturer's own material. We do not have documented mat dimensions, wattage, heat range, motor count or fabric composition for this unit, so you will not find those numbers quoted above.
Two things worth knowing first
The handset is labelled in Chinese. The buttons themselves are the ones you would expect — power and timer, mode, strength, speed, positioning, and heat — and the labelled diagram in the image gallery above maps each one. But the printing on the handset is not in English, whichever plug you pick, and some buyers have been caught out by that. We would rather you knew before you ordered than after.
We cannot confirm an automatic shut-off. The power button doubles as a timer, so a session can be set to end. We do not, however, hold manufacturer documentation stating an unattended automatic shut-off or how long it runs before cutting out. Until we do, treat this as a device you switch on while you are awake and switch off yourself — see the safety notes below.
Using it safely
This is a comfort and relaxation product. It is not a medical device, and it does not treat or cure back pain, sciatica, a disc problem, an injury or any other condition.
- Do not sleep on it. Stay awake and switch it off yourself when you are done. Do not leave it running unattended, and do not leave it switched on in an unoccupied bed.
- Never fold, bunch or crease it while it is powered. A folded heating element concentrates heat in one spot. Unplug it and let it cool before folding it away, and never run it under a duvet, another blanket or a pile of cushions.
- Do not use it with a damaged cord, plug, handset or mat. If the fabric is scorched, split or wet, or the cable is nicked, frayed or crushed, stop using it. Do not use it damp, and do not put it in a washing machine — it contains motors, wiring and a heating element. Unplug it and wipe the surface.
- Reduced sensation is the real risk with heat. If you have diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage, or any reduced feeling in your skin, speak to a clinician before using a heated product. Skin that cannot feel heat properly can burn without warning you.
- Not for anyone who cannot move off it unaided — including young children, and anyone who could not feel that it had become too warm or get themselves clear of it.
- Ask your doctor or physiotherapist first if you are pregnant, have osteoporosis, a disc problem, a recent injury, circulatory problems, or an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker.
Use it on top of bedding or a firm surface, not underneath a fitted sheet or a mattress protector.
Frequently asked questions
The title says “sleeping”. Can I sleep on it?
No — and we would rather correct our own product title than let that stand. The title describes the positions the mat can be used in, lying down among them. It is not a statement that the mat is rated for use while you are asleep, and we have no manufacturer documentation saying it is. Use it awake and switch it off before you settle down.
Will it fix my back pain?
We cannot tell you that, and anyone who does is guessing. What the mat does is mechanical and honest: rotating nodes that knead, an air bag that lifts, and warmth. Plenty of people find that combination comfortable at the end of a day. If you have an actual diagnosed back condition, ask your clinician whether a mechanical massager is a good idea for it.
Is it as strong as a proper massage chair?
No. A chair braces the mechanism against a rigid frame and can push hard. A mat lies flat and works with your own bodyweight on top of it, which is meaningfully gentler. For a lot of people that is the point — but if you want the force of a chair, this is not a chair.
How big is it?
We do not have a manufacturer dimension we are willing to quote, so we will describe it instead: it is a mat rather than a mattress topper — long enough for an adult to lie on from the back of the head to roughly mid-calf, and about shoulder width. On a double bed there is plain bedding either side of it.
Does the heat run without the massage?
Yes. Heat has its own button on the handset, separate from the massage controls, so you can run either one on its own or both together.
Is the handset wired or wireless?
Wired. The handset is on a cable running to a control box on the edge of the mat, so it stays with the mat and cannot be lost down the side of the sofa. It also means the mat needs to be within cable reach of where your hand rests.
Is the air bag automatic?
No — it is inflated by hand, with a rubber squeeze bulb on a hose. That is deliberate: you stop squeezing when the lift feels right, which is more precise than a preset. Release it to let the mat go flat again.
Is it noisy?
There is an audible motor hum, as with any mechanical massager. Unremarkable alongside a television, clearly noticeable in a silent room.
Which plug should I choose?
Whichever matches your wall sockets — US, UK or EU. The mat itself is identical across all three; only the plug on the end of the cable differs.
