The floor is fine. It is your back that gives out

Sitting on the floor is comfortable for about ten minutes. Then you start hunting for something to lean on — the sofa edge, a wall, a stack of cushions that slides away the moment you settle into it. You end up sitting badly, or you get up and go back to the couch you were trying to get out of.

This is a back for the floor. It sits flat on the ground with nothing under it, holds an angle you choose, and stays where you put it.

Upright for sitting, flat for lying down

The backrest sets to six angles between bolt upright and completely flat. Upright is the meditation and floor-work position, where you want your spine stacked rather than slouched. Halfway back is where most people leave it for gaming, reading and television. All the way down and it is a flat pad you can lie on.

You change it by moving the back, not by finding a lever underneath. There is nothing to assemble and nothing to screw together — it works out of the box.

Nothing presses into the base of your spine

The back panel is cut away in a wide arch just above the seat. That is the part of a hard chair that usually digs in — the low ridge that catches the bottom of your spine when you lean back. Here there is an open gap at that height instead, and the padded shell picks you up above it, across the small of the back and up between the shoulder blades.

It is not only a floor chair

Because it has no legs and no frame sticking out below the seat, it works on any flat surface, not just the ground. Put it on a bleacher or a park bench and a backless plank becomes a seat with a back. Put it on a bed and you can sit up to read without building a wall of pillows. It also goes on a boat seat, a picnic blanket, a hotel room floor or the tailgate.

It is a soft indoor cushion, so keep it out of the rain and off wet ground — but on a dry bench or a dry blanket it does the job it does at home.

Folds to a pad, not to a pile of frame

Fold the back down onto the seat and the whole chair becomes one flat velvet oval, about 25.6 by 19.7 inches (65 by 50 cm). No legs to catch, no hinges standing proud. It slides under a bed or a sofa, stands behind a door, or goes flat in the trunk of a car. Set up, it stands 15.7 inches (40 cm) tall — lower than a dining chair seat, so it does not block a room the way an armchair does.

What it is made of

A metal frame inside, sponge padding over it, and a matte black velvet cover on the outside. The velvet is the part you will notice: it is soft against bare legs, which matters on something you sit on cross-legged, and black hides the marks a light fabric would show.

The care instruction from the manufacturer is spot-clean. There is a zip along the cushion seam, but no removable, machine-washable cover is documented for this model, so treat the velvet as a spot-clean surface rather than something to put through a wash.
