Almost nobody changes the head as often as they mean to. It is not laziness — it is that a pack of two costs more than it feels like it should, and there is never a spare in the cupboard when the bristles finally give up.

Buying eight or twenty at a time fixes the behaviour rather than the intention. When there is a drawer full, you swap because there is nothing stopping you.

Check the fitting before you order

This is the whole decision, and it takes ten seconds in the bathroom. Pull your current head off and look at what it sat on.

A slim metal shaft, and a round head that pushes straight down over it. That is the fitting these are made for.

No shaft, and the head holds on magnetically. That is an Oral-B iO handle. These will not fit it — the iO drives its head a completely different way and takes only iO heads. A flat, oval, sonic-style head does not fit either, from any brand.

Swapping one takes a second

Pull the old head straight off. Push the new one down onto the shaft until it seats. No tools, no adapter, nothing to line up.

What the bristles actually are

A round head, cut level, with the filaments in straight rows: a ring of blue filaments angled outward around the rim, and a shorter green cluster across the centre. That is the honest description of the shape — no more than that. Whatever head you use, the thing that matters most is not pressing. Rest it against the tooth and let the handle do the moving; leaning on it is what splays bristles early and what your gums feel.

A colour each, so one handle can serve a household

The heads carry coloured identification rings in four colours. One handle on the charger, a head each, and nobody has to remember whose is whose — which is the practical reason households end up buying a second and third toothbrush they did not need.

How often to change them

General dental guidance is a fresh head roughly every three months, and sooner if the bristles start to splay outward. That is the general guidance, not a claim of ours about these heads.

At one head per person every three months, a pack of 20 is five person-years of swaps — a year and a half for a household of three, or five years for one person.

Will these fit my handle?

If your current head is round and pushes straight down onto a slim metal shaft, yes. If there is no shaft and the head attaches magnetically, no — that is an Oral-B iO handle and it takes only iO heads. If your head is flat and oval rather than round, no.

Are these genuine Oral-B heads?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. These are third-party replacement heads made to fit the round snap-on fitting Oral-B uses across most of its rechargeable range. They are not manufactured by, sold by, affiliated with or endorsed by Oral-B.

Which Oral-B handles use that fitting?

The round snap-on shaft is the fitting on the Vitality, Pro, Smart and Genius handles, among others. The two exceptions in the range are iO, which is magnetic, and the flat-headed Pulsonic sonic handles. If you are unsure, go by the shaft rather than the model name — the shaft never lies.

How often should I change them?

General dental guidance is about every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay outward. Splayed bristles are also a signal that you are pressing too hard.

Do the coloured rings come already fitted?

Yes. The rings are on the heads when they arrive, so you can tell them apart straight out of the pack.

Which pack size should I choose?

Work in person-years. One person swapping every three months uses four heads a year. So 8 is two years for one person or a year for a couple; 20 is five person-years. Buy for how many people share the handle, not for how long you think you will keep the brush.

Do I get a handle with these?

No. This is replacement heads only. You keep the handle and charger you already own — that is the entire point of it.
