A doorstop that shouts when the door moves
This is a plastic wedge about as long as your palm, with a steel plate on its ramp and a siren inside it. You push the thin end under a closed door and flick it on. If the door is pushed, the wedge digs in against the floor and the siren goes off.
That is the entire product. It does not connect to anything, it does not need tools, and it leaves no marks on a rented door. It is the sort of thing you put in a carry-on and forget about until the night you are in an unfamiliar hotel room and would rather the door made a noise before anything else happened.
Two things work together: the wedge, which makes a closed door harder to push open and slower to open quietly, and the vibration sensor, which sets off the siren at the first movement — before the door has travelled far.
What we are not going to tell you
This page used to promise that the product would stop an intruder from getting in. We have taken that out, and we want to be straight about why rather than quietly editing it.
A rubber-footed wedge under a door is a delay and a deterrent. Against a shoulder, a crowbar or a determined push on a smooth floor, a wedge is not a barrier and no honest seller can say otherwise. The thing that actually protects you here is the noise: a sudden siren at close range ends the quiet entry that most opportunists depend on, and it wakes you up.
Buy it as a loud early warning that also makes the door stiff. Do not buy it as a substitute for a lock, a deadbolt or a door chain, and please do not skip locking the door because this is under it.
About the decibel number
The manufacturer rates the siren at 120 dB. Here is what that figure is and is not worth.
A decibel reading only means something if you also say how far from the speaker it was measured — the same siren reads far higher at an inch than at a metre. No measuring distance is published with this rating, by our supplier or by anyone else selling this style of wedge alarm, so there is no way to verify it and we are not going to present it as a tested measurement. Treat 120 dB as the category rating it is.
What we can say honestly is the practical part: it is a piezo siren in a small plastic body, and it is loud in the way a smoke alarm going off in the next room is loud. In a hotel corridor or a quiet flat at three in the morning, that is more than enough to wake you and to be heard through a wall.
Please treat it as genuinely loud
Sound at this level is not harmless. Around 120 dB is where noise stops being merely loud and becomes physically painful, and close-range exposure at that level can damage hearing — a child's more easily than an adult's.
- Test it at arm's length. The first time you switch it on, have it away from your head and pointing away from you.
- Never near an ear. Not yours, not anyone else's, and never as a prank.
- Not a toy, and not for a child's room. It is a siren in a palm-sized package. Keep it away from small children, and do not place it where an infant sleeps.
- Switch it off before you open the door yourself. Otherwise you will set it off, at close range, on your own way out.
- Warn whoever you are travelling with. A sibling or partner coming back to the room at 2 a.m. should know it is there.
Setting it up takes about a minute
Open the hatch underneath, clip in a 9-volt battery, close it. Put the thin steel-plated end under the closed door, so the plate slides beneath and the tall end sits on the floor. Slide the switch to on.
A second slider sets how much movement it takes to trigger the siren — three positions, from a hair-trigger to something that ignores the building shaking when a lorry goes past. On an old timber floor or a room above a busy road, start at the least sensitive position and work up.
With the alarm switched off, it still works as an ordinary doorstop for holding a door open.
Where it works, and where it will not
A wedge is a simple piece of physics and it has real limits. Check these against your own door before you order:
- Inward-opening doors only. If your door opens away from you into the corridor, a wedge on your side does nothing at all. This is the single most common reason people are disappointed by one.
- The floor has to grip. Wood, tile, vinyl, thin commercial carpet: good. Polished stone, a loose rug, or deep shag carpet the wedge sinks into: poor, because the whole unit slides or floats instead of biting.
- It needs a gap under the door. Too little clearance and the plate will not slide under; a very large gap and it will not reach the door.
- Nothing is transmitted. No Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth, no app, no SIM. It makes a noise where it is standing. It does not notify your phone, a monitoring service or anyone else.
- It is one unit. One wedge covers one door.
If your door opens outward, what you want is a portable door lock or a travel door brace instead — not this.
The battery
It runs on a single 9-volt (6F22) battery, which is not included. We would rather tell you that here than have you find out in a hotel room. Pick one up with the order, or check the drawer at home — it is the rectangular one with the two clips on top.
There are no coin cells or button batteries anywhere in this product.
