The detail should come to you
Close work punishes posture. You lean in, tilt your head, and hold that position — not because you want to, but because the detail is smaller than your unaided eye can resolve at a comfortable distance.
A loupe reverses that trade. The barrels are set for a working distance of about 16.5 in (420 mm) — roughly a forearm’s length — and they enlarge what sits there. You work at the distance your neck prefers instead of the one your eyes demand.
2.5x for range, 3.5x for detail
The two magnifications are not a better-and-worse pair, they are different working styles. 2.5x keeps a wider field in view, which suits work where you move around the site and want context. 3.5x narrows the field and enlarges what is left, which suits margins, fine finishing, and anything where a fraction of a millimetre changes the outcome.
Both are fixed focus. You set your working distance once and the image stays sharp as long as you hold it. Most people find the position within a session or two and stop thinking about it.
Light that follows your eyeline — if you choose it
An overhead lamp lights the room, not the inside of a cavity or a narrow channel your own hands are leaning over. Your head and instruments cast the shadow exactly where you need to see. A headlight mounted on the frame travels with your gaze and arrives roughly parallel to it, so deep working areas stay lit as you move.
Check the Frame option before you order. The five frame colours — white, red, black, purple and blue — ship with the LED headlight fitted. The No Light option is the loupe on its own, for anyone who already runs a separate headlight or works under dedicated task lighting.
Treat the LED as you would any bright work light: do not look into it, and do not point it at anyone’s eyes, including your own in a mirror. Aim it down at the work, switch it off when you set the loupe down, and keep it away from children.
What you get
- Twin magnifier barrels in your choice of 2.5x or 3.5x, set for a 16.5 in (420 mm) working distance
- A wraparound frame with a one-piece clear shield lens, in your choice of six frame options
- LED headlight fitted to the frame on the five colour options — not on No Light
- Adjustable barrel spacing, so the two circles merge for your own eye spacing
- A zip-up hard shell carry case, roughly the footprint of a small paperback
Fitting it the first time
Spend five minutes on this once and the optics stop being something you think about.
- Set the spacing. Loosen the two knurled thumbscrews and slide the barrels until the two circular fields merge into one clear circle with no dark crescent at either edge, then tighten them again.
- Find your distance. Hold your normal working position and move slightly closer or further until the image snaps into focus. Around a forearm’s length is the target.
- Angle the frame. Tilt so the field sits where you look naturally. You should not have to drop your chin to bring work into view.
- Aim the light. If your version has the headlight, point it down into the centre of the magnified field, so the lit area and the sharp area are the same area — never toward a face.
Anywhere the tolerance is tighter than your eyes
Dental and hygiene work, where margins and finish quality read differently under magnification than under a bright overhead lamp alone. Lab and technician work on models and appliances. Veterinary practice, at a working distance that keeps you off the table.
And plenty of benchwork outside the clinic — electronics repair, jewellery setting, watchmaking, model finishing, fly tying. Same problem, different bench.
Plainly: this is a magnifying optic on a spectacle frame, with a work light on most versions. It is sold as equipment, not as a regulated medical device, it is not supplied sterile, and nothing here is a substitute for the instruments, protocols and protective equipment your own practice requires.
Frequently asked questions
Does every version come with the light?
No. The five frame colours include the LED headlight. The separate No Light option is the loupe alone — choose it only if you already have lighting sorted.
Which magnification should I choose?
2.5x for a wider field and more context around the site, 3.5x if your work lives in a small area and you need the detail enlarged. If you have never worn a loupe before, 2.5x is the easier adaptation.
How far away do I have to sit?
The barrels are marked for a 420 mm working distance, about 16.5 in, which is roughly a forearm’s length from eye to work. That figure is the same on both the 2.5x and the 3.5x.
Can I wear it over prescription glasses?
The frame is designed to be worn on its own. If you depend on a strong prescription for distance, check the fit against your own frames before committing to a full session with it.
Does the field stay sharp if I move?
The optics are fixed focus, so sharpness is tied to your working distance. Small movements are fine; leaning substantially in or out softens the image until you return to position.
Will it feel heavy over a long day?
Balance matters more than total weight. Set the frame angle properly during fitting — most discomfort traces back to a frame sitting too low, which makes you tip your head to find the field.
Is the headlight bright enough on its own?
It is built to light the magnified field, not the whole room. Most people run it alongside normal ambient lighting rather than instead of it. We do not publish a lumen figure for it, because we have not measured one.
