DIY windshield chip repair

Seal a small windshield chip at home

A suction-cup bridge holds an injector over the chip and pushes clear resin into the break. Once the resin cures in the sun, the break is sealed and much less visible.

It is made for small damage: chips, bullseyes and star breaks about the size of a quarter or smaller, and short cracks that run out from a chip. This page tells you exactly what it can and cannot fix, so you know before you buy.

Before you buy

What it can fix, and what it can't

Good fit: a chip, bullseye, star break or half-moon in the windshield about 1 in (2.5 cm) across or smaller, or a short crack running out from a chip.
Not for long cracks: long cracks, cracks that reach the edge of the windshield, and damage that goes through both layers of glass need a glass shop or a new windshield.
Not for side or rear windows: those are usually tempered glass, which shatters instead of chipping. This kit is for laminated windshield glass.
In front of the driver: for damage right in the driver's line of sight, a glass shop is the better call, because even a good repair can leave a faint distortion.

What to expect: the resin fills the break and seals out air and dirt, so the damage becomes much less visible. A faint mark or outline usually remains. It does not make the glass new.

How it works

Four steps, then let the sun do the rest

Clean the chip

Brush out loose glass and make sure the windshield is clean and dry.

Mount the bridge

Press the four suction cups onto the glass with the injector centered over the chip.

Fill the break

Add resin to the injector and screw the plunger cap down so the resin is pushed into the chip.

Cure and scrape

Cover the spot with a curing film, let it cure in sunlight, then scrape it flush with the blade.

Before you start

A few rules for a clean repair

Work in shade, cure in sun. Fill the chip out of direct sun so the resin does not start to set too early, then move the car into direct sunlight to cure it. On a cloudy day, curing takes longer.
Repair it soon. A chip that has filled with dirt and water is harder to repair cleanly.
Handle the resin with care. It is an irritant: wear gloves, keep it off your skin and out of your eyes, work in fresh air and keep it away from children.
Mind the blade. The razor blade is sharp; slide it back into its sleeve when you are done.
