Plush pigs like this one sell in five very different sizes, and the number on the label is the length of the pig as it lies down — snout to rump — not how tall it stands. Read it as height and you will order something half the size you pictured. Here is what each one actually is.

Every figure above is a length, measured with the pig lying prone the way it is designed to sit. Widths run a little under the length and the body is low and flat, not tall.

Two faces. Same chubby body.

The face option is the only thing that changes between the two versions. Everything else — the pale pink plush, the flattened round body, the floppy ears, the little hoof tips, all five lengths — is identical.

• Sleepy — eyes embroidered as two short, soft closed lines. A calm, half-asleep expression that suits a bedroom.
• Wide-Eyed — two large round dark eyes set wide apart. Brighter, more cartoon-like, more of a character in the room.

Why it feels the way it does

The body is a single rounded oval with no neck and no seam running across the front, so there is no hard edge anywhere you would put your face. It is filled with PP cotton, which is the light, springy synthetic fill used in most soft cushions — it compresses easily under an arm and pushes back into shape rather than staying flat.

The surface is a short, dense plush pile. The snout is a raised oval sewn on as a separate piece with two stitched nostrils, the eyes are embroidered rather than plastic, and the ears are soft flat flaps rather than stiffened shapes.

What it is good for

• Something to hold. The shape is built to be hugged from the front rather than draped over, which is why the mid and large sizes get used as reading and lounging cushions.
• Filling out a bed or a sofa. The two largest lengths read as furniture more than as a toy.
• A gift that lands visually. The size is the whole joke at 31.5 in and up. Choose the length for the reaction you want.
