A platform that shakes, and you stand on it
This is an oscillating vibration plate. It is a low, wide floor machine with a textured rubber deck. Switch it on and the deck oscillates rapidly underneath you, and because the floor beneath your feet will not hold still, your legs and core keep working to keep you steady. You can stand on it, sit in a chair with your feet on it, or kneel and put your hands on it. There is a speed control and a timer, and that is the machine.
What this machine can and cannot do
A vibration plate is exercise equipment. It is not a fat-loss treatment, and standing on it does not remove fat from the part of your body you point it at.
Losing fat from one chosen area by treating that area — the idea behind "thin arm, thin thigh, thin waist" marketing — is not something the evidence supports, for this machine or any other. The supplier publishes no trial, no measured result and no timeframe for this unit, so there are no numbers on this page about inches, pounds or calories. We do not have them.
What it genuinely is: a way to make standing still into something that is not standing still. People use it for short sessions while watching television, for gentle movement on days they will not go out, and for the plain physical pleasure of the vibration through tired legs and feet. If that sounds worth having, it is a good machine. If you are buying it to replace exercise or a diet, it will disappoint you.
The deck you stand on
The surface is ribbed rubber with rows of small raised nubs set into it, so it grips and it presses back against your soles. Five zones are marked across the deck. Because the platform pivots, the further out toward the edges you place your feet, the more movement you get; stand near the middle and it is gentler. That is how you change the intensity without touching the controls.
Size, and why it matters before you buy
That footprint is the outside of the chassis, taken from the manufacturer's own dimension drawing. It is a real piece of floor furniture, not something you tuck in a drawer, so measure the spot you intend to keep it in before you order.
Using it
- Set it on a flat, firm floor. On hard tile it can travel a little, so a mat underneath helps.
- Start on the lowest speed and stand near the centre of the deck until you know how it feels.
- Hold onto something steady the first few times. The floor moving under you is a strange sensation and balance takes a session or two.
- Short sessions. This is a machine people use for a few minutes at a time, not for an hour.
- It is not silent. On a hardwood floor you and the room below will hear it.
Before you use it
Whole-body vibration is not for everyone. Do not use it if you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor before using it if you have a pacemaker or any implanted device, a history of blood clots, recent surgery, a fracture or joint replacement, severe osteoporosis, retinal problems, epilepsy, or any condition affecting your balance. If you feel dizzy, get off it.
These are the standard cautions for whole-body vibration equipment. The supplier does not publish a contraindication list with this unit, which is a gap worth knowing about rather than one to ignore.
What arrives
- One vibration plate
- Its power lead
That is the whole shipment. There are no resistance bands, no straps and no mat included with it, so if you want a mat under it you will need to buy one separately.
