Striped Hammock Chair – Hanging Rope Swing Seat with Cushions for Porch, Patio, Bedroom & Camping

A striped canvas seat that hangs from one point and swings

This is a rope hammock chair: a deep pouch of woven striped canvas with a wide hem down each side, hung on a fan of soft cotton ropes that gather into one loop at the top. Hang that loop from a hook, a beam or a thick branch and you have a seat that cradles you and moves when you do. Two matching cushions come with it, a square one for your back and a flat one for the seat. It comes in two sizes and several stripe colorways, and it packs flat into a bag for a porch, a balcony, a bedroom corner or a campsite tree.

What it actually is

• A gathered-rope chair, not a spreader-bar chair. The ropes run straight from the side hems up to a single knotted loop. There is no wooden or steel bar across the top. That makes it lighter and easier to pack, and it means the seat wraps around you rather than holding open like a flat swing.
• Woven striped canvas. The maker describes the fabric as a polyester-cotton blend canvas; it does not publish the exact mix. It is a woven, breathable cloth with broad color stripes, not a mesh and not a macrame weave.
• Two sizes. The large seat panel is about 51 inches tall by 39 inches wide (130 x 100 cm); the medium is about 39 inches tall by 31 inches wide (100 x 80 cm). Choose large if you want to pull your feet up inside it; medium suits a smaller person or a tighter corner.
• Two cushions included. A square back pillow and a flat seat cushion in the matching stripe, as shown in the maker's package photograph.
• One overhead hanging point. The loop needs a single anchor rated for a person's weight: a screw-in ceiling hook into a joist, a hammock strap around a beam or branch, or a hammock-chair stand. None of that hardware is included.

Hanging it

• Pick a solid anchor. Indoors, a heavy-duty screw hook driven into the centre of a ceiling joist, never into drywall or plaster alone. Outdoors, a wide hammock strap or a rated rope around a live branch at least as thick as your forearm, or a hammock-chair stand.
• Set the height. With the chair empty, the seat should sit at about knee height. It drops several inches once you are in it.
• Sit in it once with your feet on the ground before you lift them, and get out the same way. The seat swings and turns; keep small children and pets clear while someone is getting in or out.
• Bring it in. Canvas and cotton rope take on water. Rain and damp will stain and weaken it over time, so take it in, or hang it under cover.

Good to know

• It is a one-person seat. The maker's rating is for one adult. Two people, or an adult with a child on their lap, exceed what it is made for.
• Spot clean only. The maker's care line says do not wash. Brush off loose dirt, sponge marks with mild soap and water, and let it dry fully in the shade before folding it.
• Colors will fade in full sun. Dyed canvas left outdoors all summer will lighten. Hanging it under a porch roof or bringing it in between uses keeps the stripes bright.
• The ropes are soft cotton. They stretch a little at first and can fray where they rub on a rough hook or bark; use a strap or a smooth hook, and check the loop before each season.
• It does not fold into a chair on its own. Without an anchor point overhead it is a bag of canvas. If you have nowhere to hang it, you need a stand, sold separately by others.
