A sock with a sole on it

That is the honest description, and it is the reason to buy them. They pull on like a thick sock — no laces, no straps, no buckles, nothing to fasten — and a thin sheet of rubber on the bottom puts a layer between your foot and whatever you are standing on. Hot sand. Pool grit. Barnacles on the ladder. The pebbles at the water’s edge that make you walk in like a heron.

Where they earn their place

In the bag. They weigh almost nothing and they squash flat, so they end up on every beach day, every pool trip and every boat afternoon, which is more than you can say for the pair of trainers you would otherwise have to carry, wear into the water or leave behind. You wade in wearing them, you come out wearing them, and the water runs straight back out through the knit instead of sitting in the shoe.

About the sole — read this part

The sole is a thin, flexible sheet of rubber with a fine square waffle tread, bonded directly to the fabric. It is barefoot-thin on purpose: there is no midsole, no foam and no cushioning under your heel. You feel the ground through these, which is exactly what people who like them like about them, and exactly what people who expected a shoe are disappointed by.

We are not going to tell you these grip. The supplier prints “non-slip” on its own artwork, but no slip-resistance rating has ever been published for this product — no test, no standard, no number. Wet rock, wet tile and a wet boat deck are slippery in anything, and we are not putting your footing on a claim nobody has measured. What we can tell you is what the sole physically is: thin rubber with a fine waffle tread. Judge it on that.

What they are not for

  • Not hiking, and not rocky trails. There is no support, no protection at the ankle and effectively nothing underfoot. A sharp stone will make itself felt.
  • Not surf. A low-cut sock with no ankle coverage is the wrong thing to be wearing when a wave takes your feet out from under you.
  • Not a substitute for a proper shoe on land. They are brilliant for the walk from towel to water and useless for the walk into town.
  • Not warm. This is a thin knit, not neoprene. It keeps grit off your feet, not cold out of them.

Sizing: the part we cannot answer for you

These are sold in S, M, L, XL and 2XL, and the supplier publishes no foot length, no US conversion and no chart of any kind against those letters. We are not going to invent a conversion — a made-up shoe size is how you end up with a pair that will not go on and a return to pay for.

What we do have is our own buyers, who are consistent on one point: they fit like a sock and they come up true to size. If you are between sizes, the stretch knit is forgiving upward and unforgiving downward, so take the larger one.

Looking after them

Rinse the salt or the chlorine out under a tap when you get home, squeeze rather than wring, and leave them somewhere airy with the openings facing up. Do not put them in a tumble dryer or on a radiator: the sole is bonded to the fabric, and heat is what unsticks that bond.
