Good soil is mostly a sorting problem
Seed compost, potting mix and topdressing all want the same thing: fine, even material with the stones, roots and clumps taken out. Bought bags are inconsistent, and your own compost is full of things that have not broken down yet.
This set does the separating — a round riddle for volume, and a mesh scoop for working straight out of a bag or a bin.
Two tools, because there are two jobs
The round riddle sits across a barrow or a bucket and handles quantity — a barrow of home compost in a few minutes. The scoop is mesh-bottomed, so it lifts and sifts in one motion: dig it into a bag, shake once, and what lands in the pot is already screened.
Steel, and a rolled rim
Both pieces are steel throughout, and the riddle's edge is rolled over rather than cut — which matters when you are gripping it hard and shaking it for ten minutes with gloves on. Plastic garden sieves flex and eventually split at the rim; this does not.
Potting up without the mess
The scoop is the one that gets used most, because it goes straight from the compost sack to the pot without a trowel, a bucket and three trips. It is equally at home in a bag of grit or sharp sand.
Getting good results out of it
The one rule that decides whether sifting is satisfying or infuriating: the material has to be dry. Wet soil blinds the mesh in seconds and you end up pushing mud through with your thumbs. Let it dry, half-fill the riddle, and shake side to side rather than bouncing it.

Steel mesh will corrode if it is put away wet with soil in it — knock it out, rinse it and let it dry. Wear gloves: cut wire mesh and a shaking motion are not kind to bare hands.
