They sit on your shoulders on fabric straps,\nyou hold one telescopic rod in each hand, and the whole span opens and closes with your arms. In a dark\nroom they read as a solid sheet of moving light. That is the honest position, and it is the same whichever size you buy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe good news on batteries.\u003c\/strong\u003e The pack takes \u003cstrong\u003ethree AA cells\u003c\/strong\u003e. It does\nnot take coin cells - and that distinction matters more than anything else on this page. A swallowed\ncoin cell can burn through a child's esophagus within hours and is a medical emergency; AA cells are\nnot that hazard. They are still not something to leave loose in a room with a toddler, and you should\ncheck the battery cover is properly shut before a child puts the wings on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat we would actually watch.\u003c\/strong\u003e There are three things on this costume that we would\nnot leave a young child alone with:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eThe straps and the lead at the neck.\u003c\/strong\u003e Anything that goes round a child's neck and\n  can catch on furniture, a bannister or playground equipment is a snag risk. Put them on for a\n  performance or a party and take them off afterwards. Never leave them on a sleeping child, in a car\n  seat, on a bike, or anywhere with climbing frames or slides.\u003c\/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eThe telescopic rods.\u003c\/strong\u003e They are metal poles that extend to roughly arm's length and\n  they collapse under a squeeze - which means fingers can be pinched at the joints. Extended and swung\n  at head height in a crowd of other children they are an eye hazard. These are not toys and they are\n  not swords.\u003c\/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eThe film itself.\u003c\/strong\u003e Pleated costume film tears if it is stood on or caught, and a\n  torn wing has a sharp-ish edge. It is a costume, not play equipment.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUsed the way they are meant to be - on stage, at a recital, at a party, with an adult in the room -\nthey are a lovely thing. It takes\n\u003cstrong\u003ethree AA cells, which are not included\u003c\/strong\u003e - buy a pack with the wings, because there is\nnothing more deflating than a costume that arrives the day before the party and will not light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe switch is on the box itself. The supplier lists \u003cstrong\u003etwo modes, a steady glow and a twinkle\nmode\u003c\/strong\u003e, cycled from that switch. On the supplier's own photograph of the red wings we can pick out more than two\nhundred and fifty separate lit points, and that photo cannot show the ones facing away or hidden in a\nfold - so \u003cstrong\u003e\"hundreds of LEDs\" is a fair description\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat they are \u003cem\u003enot\u003c\/em\u003e is beads set into the fabric. They are \u003cstrong\u003etiny LEDs soldered onto\nfine copper wire\u003c\/strong\u003e - fairy-light strings - and those strings are run out along every pleat from\nthe center of the back to the wingtip, then round the outer edge. You can see the wire between the\nfolds when the wings are closed. That construction is why they are light enough to dance in, and it is\nalso the honest answer to how they should be handled: a wire string will survive being folded, and it\nwill not survive being yanked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach color option is a different LED color, not a different fabric.
